Former Finnegan's Chef Opens New Deli In Yorktown

MOHEGAN LAKE, N.Y. – The ever-growing Route 6 business scene in Mohegan Lake filled another vacancy earlier this month with the opening of Diego’s Deli, BBQ & Catering.

Chef Diego Sarmiento has worked at several Westchester restaurants for more than 15 years, but he said he decided it was finally time to become his own boss. Sarmiento previously cooked for Finnegan’s Grill in Yorktown Heights and Memphis Mae's Barbecue Restaurant in his hometown of Croton-on-Hudson.

“I want to bring all my knowledge about cooking,” Sarmiento said. While barbecue is his passion, Diego’s offers various breakfast, lunch, dinner and dessert dishes. “Everything’s homemade. Even the fries we cut in here and fry them.”

Diego’s opened in the 1859 E. Main St. shopping plaza next to Dunkin Donuts three weeks ago with a quiet opening. “I didn’t invite any politicians,” Sarmiento said. “Just some friends and neighbors.”

So far, Sarmiento said he is enjoying the different dynamic of working up front in the deli instead of behind the scenes in a restaurant. He said he likes being able to interact with the customers who eat his food.

Sarmiento has truly made the store his home away from home since its opening, not leaving once during business hours.

“I don’t have another chef right now; I’m the only one,” said Sarmiento, who has been working seven days per week from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. “But I’m really happy, I love to do this.”

Catering and in-store menus are available on Diego's Facebook page.
