The most popular destinations to pick apples in the county include Harvest Moon Farm and Outhouse Orchard in North Salem, Stuart’s Farm in Granite Springs and Wilkens Fruit & Fir Farm in Yorktown Heights. All four offer a wide variety of apples and free admission.
Though traditional apple picking season runs from Labor Day to Halloween, Harvest Moon Farm manager Christine Tartaglia said her apple supply might be gone by the end of this weekend.
“We just had a crazy September, the busiest season we’ve ever had,” she said. “The weather and apples have just been that good.”
Harvest Moon Farm is located at 130 Hardscabble Road and carries Macintosh, Liberty, Gold Delicious, Mutsu Crispin and Idared apples. They sit directly across from Outhouse Orchard, which also carries a robust selection of the fruit.
“We’ll have apples through October,” owner Wayne Outhouse said. “We’ve had a very good crop this year and the turnout has been tremendous because of the weather. That’s the key secret to growing and picking apples – the weather.”
Outhouse Orchard carries Macintosh, Cortland, Gold and Red Delicious, Baldwin and Rome apples. Outhouse said Macintosh and Cortlands have been the favorites thus far.
“They have a knack for tasting good right off the tree,” he said.
Wilkens Fruit & Fir Farm, located at 1135 White Hill Road in Yorktown Heights, might have the biggest variety of apples in the area, as the expect to have Macintosh, Gala, Baldwin, Granny Smith, Braeburn, Cortland, Cameo, Snow Banana, Fuji, Macoun and Winesap apples through the end of October.
Stuart’s Farm, located at 62 Granite Springs Road, is the oldest family farm in Westchester and offers nine types of apples.
All four locations begin their pumpkin picking season sometime in October.
