The restaurant, run by Mahopac resident Donna Massao, will be celebrating its fifth anniversary in June.

Freight House Cafe is tucked away on Route 6 in a building built in 1872 that was first used for the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad Branch.

"I love food, cooking and serving the community," Massaro said. "This has been a dream of mine for a long time."

Freight House recently obtained its liquor license and is hosting live music on Saturday, with Canopus, a jazz band, performing this week. With her restaurant, Massaro said she feels she is filling a void in the area.

"There's really nothing like it," Massaro said.

Speciality items include the Mahopac Wrap with cheddar cheese, sour cream, pico di gallo, avocado, brown organic rice, and the BLTA- bacon, lettuce, tomato and avocado.

"All of our ingredients are from the USA," Massaro said. "We try to have our food be as local and organic as possible. I'm careful about what I put in my body. I don't want to put in junk."

One of the joys of running the restaurant for Massaro is her customer have become like family to her.

"I've made a lot of friends since I opened this place," Massaro said.

Massaro sees Freight House Cafe as a place where adults can come to relax and unwind.

"We want our guests to be comfortable," Massaro said. "You can just come here for 10 minutes and purchase a cup of coffee if you need to recharge."

Before opening The Freight House, Massaro ran Donna's Place. In her almost 30 years in the restaurant business, she's been a waitress, runner, busgirl, bartender and attended culinary school.

"You have to love what you do," Massaro said.

Massaro also believes in giving back to the community. The restaurant has hosted readings of the Vagina Monologues and offers a support group for single fathers.

The Freight House Cafe is at 609 Route 6 in Mahopac. For more information, visit www.thefreighthousecafe.com
