MOHEGAN LAKE, N.Y. The closing ceremonies have come and gone, but the London Olympics could have some lingering effects for at least one local business.
Girls and boys get much more interested after they see an Olympics, said Nancy Brophy, owner of Dynamic Gymnastics, regarding enrollment increases during Olympic seasons.
Located on Route 6, Dynamic Gymnastics provides training for aspiring young gymnasts across Westchester and Putnam Valley. The club might be attractive for parents looking for the next Gabby Douglas, as students learn firsthand from former Olympic gymnasts.
Husband and wife coaches Teodora and Sorin Cepoi both competed for Romania in Olympic games. Teodora competed at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal and won the silver medal in the womens team all-around and on the uneven bars, and also claimed the bronze medal on the balance beam. Sorin competed in the 1976 games and the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow.
I found them back in 1995 when I was thinking of starting my own gymnastics school, Brophy said. They heard my gym was available, so they contacted me.
Dynamic Gymnastics has trained many girls and boys competitively, with some continuing on to prestigious gymnastics careers. Brophy said many compete in college.
Among the talented students who train at the gym with Sorin and Teodora Cepoi is Sabrina Vega, 17, from Carmel. Vega is a U.S. Senior National Team member and belonged to the gold-winning U.S. team in the 2011 World Championships. Most recently, she competed in the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials but was not selected for the team.
Several programs are available for new students, including preschool classes, recreational gymnastics, and team and competitive level gymnastics.
We have a big team, with students of all levels, explained Brophy. She noted that the gym has students from about five school districts, including Yorktown and Cortlandt.
Dynamic Gymnastics has concluded its summer programs, but classes will resume in September and continue through June.
