YORKTOWN, N.Y. – A proposed Costco Wholesale Club at 3200 Crompond Road has seemingly divided the town into supporting and opposing groups for the project, and we want to know where you stand.
Do You Want Costco In Yorktown?
View ResultsOpponents believe that Costco will drive out local businesses, increase traffic, and bring many environmental concerns. Supporters maintain that Costco’s presence will bring in more customers to the business district as a whole, and increase the commercial tax base for the school district and the town.
In a simple "yes" or "no" poll, tell us if you think Yorktown officials should approve the proposal for the 150,000-square-foot superstore. If no, tell us in the comments or on our Facebook page what you would rather see built on the property.

These guys are either getting paid by Costco OR... excited because gas will be 5 cents less a gallon and they don't mind waiting 15 minutes in line to get it. Don't forget the up to 1000 cars per hour that will be entering and exiting Costco... they're not all coming from the Taconic, and they are going to bottleneck where 202 closes to one lane each way.
I have bought gas many times at Costco stations and I've never waited 15 minutes in line. And if you think there is no traffic in Yorktown as a result of the Cortlandt Town Center, I guess you've shown us that you never drive on Route 6 in Yorktown, although I am sure that at least some of the 202 traffic is heading there. I still believe that the 1000 cars per hour number is grossly overstated, and even if isn't, it's actually the number of trips arriving and departing so in reality it's double the actual number of cars.
Furthermore, having Costco gas available will help even those of you who do not become members, because local stations will be forced to drop their prices to compete. It's already happened in New Rochelle.
Well you seem to forget that Costco will be expanding the road in that area by adding additional lanes, new traffic lights and a new traffic light timing.
Not to mention the state is going to expand the road to two lanes on each side past BJs.
So no I am not being paid by Costco, I am just a smart citizen.
Would you rather not allow Costco in Yorktown so they can go to Cortland and we can get all the traffic and none of the benefits??
That seems like a genius idea! Almost as logical as all the anti-Costco comments stated at the public hearing!
Perhaps you should review the facts presented last night before you state information incorrectly.
Some pro-costco drone made the same argument Monday night. That we "lost" Home Depot but got "all the traffic." What? I'm glad Home Depot is in Cortlandt, with all it's attendant traffic. We don't have any additional traffic. Keep Home Depot, and Walmart, and all those big box stores in Cortlandt. Keep the traffic there. And Mark, I guess you don't have kids in our schools. While Cortlandt has all the big boxes (except BJ's), we have the superior school district by test scores. Yorktown: Better schools, fewer big boxes. Let's keep it that way.
I'm not sure what reality you have been living in, but we get all the traffic of people going to the Cortland Town Center via 202, but no tax revenue. Currently I don't have kids in our school, but I pay the extravagant school taxes! So considering Costco will bring around $600,000 in school taxes I am all for lowering my tax base and your crazy if your not!
I knew I forgot something!
The parcel is zoned for this use. Lets get going before someone changes their mind. You remember what happened to IBM expansion proposal on Strang Blvd many years ago, right? IBM waited two years for their proposal to be approved and then they built in Somers and closed the place on Strang. In the place of the IBM facility Pace college moved in. Tax revenue? No.
The cost of local government is rising and we need offsets. The home owners can no longer bear the burden alone.
Frank, I know that IBM story sounds really great, but I've pointed out several times that it is completely untrue. The timings of IBM being on Strang Blvd. and construction of their buildings in Somers are nowhere near each other, nor was the uses of both sites the same.
Also, was it Pace or Mercy that moved there?
I think it is prudent that I go over the oppositions "facts" presented at the hearing last night so you can make an informed decision to decide yes or no to Costco. The facts according to "Smart Growth", 1. Indian Point is destined to explode and if Costco comes to Yorktown we will not be able to escape because of the increased traffic. 2. Rubber bands in our house will all decay due to increased pollution from Costco. 3. People will exclusively use Hunterbrook and Baptist Church road to get anywhere in Yorktown. 4. Godzilla and Mothera will not be able to fit under the Taconic overpass and further congest traffic..... ok that last one is a joke, but the rest were presented as serious facts! Before you decide yes or no, decide if you believe a group that presents these fables as truths.
Mark, you left out the sky is falling!
I believe that the sky falling was #11 on her list, which sadly she did not get to.
Question 11: If the sky is falling due to Costco's excessively high light poles, will our excellent police and fire departments and ambulance corps be able to get to the site in sufficient time due to all of the traffic caused by Costco shoppers? Or will we need to station additional police and firefighters nearby in case this happens, thus adding expense that they will not pay any of?
