TARRYTOWN, N.Y. -- Most restaurants take months or even years to open. It took Barley on the Hudson two weeks.

Barley on the Hudson, located at 265 West Main Street at the former site of the Striped Bass, opened on July 4 and is currently offering outdoor dining overlooking the Hudson River.

Bobby Harris, one of the partners at Barley on the Hudson, first heard the spot was available in May and signed the lease in June. He was determined to have the restaurant open on July 4.

"It was a mixture of exciting and terrifying," Harris said. "It was a collaborative effort with everyone working together as a team."

Harris and his partners also own The Barley Tavern in Thornwood and are hoping residents enjoy his new place, especially being located next to the train station.

"We offer a laid back casual setting with a great view of the Hudson," Harris said. "People can hop off the train and come in for a quick drink."

Right now, the restaurant only offers outdoor dining. Harris plans to close in October and then re-open when the interior of the restaurant is complete. While the menu is evolving, Harris said people have been enjoying the crab cakes, Barley House burger, and buffalo wontons.

A native of Thornwood who began working in restaurants when he was 12, Harris said he enjoys getting to work right next to the Hudson River.

Much to Harris' relief, the July 4 opening went off without a hitch.

"It was exciting and terrifying until the end of the night when the fireworks went off at the end of the night," Harris said. "People were seeing the fireworks and enjoying the venue. They loved it."
