SHRUB OAK, N.Y. – For nearly two decades, the Hudson Milk Company has been bottling up nostalgia and serving it fresh to Westchester residents one doorstep at a time.
The company was started in 1994 by Tom Rubino Sr. and his wife, Therese, who were looking to take things easy after years in the demanding fabric business.
“I was looking for a milk truck, an old-fashioned milk truck that I wanted to restore and I came across this old farmer that was retiring,” Rubino said. “We got to talking and I ended up buying his truck and all 12 customers.”
But those dozen customers kept multiplying, and now Rubino said his company serves more than 1,200 families. Despite the growth, Rubino said he has kept Hudson Milk small, with the majority of his four employees being family members, including his son Tom Rubino Jr.
“We try to keep it as family as we can,” he said.
The milk is delivered fresh from Battenkill Valley Creamery in Salem to his Barger Street home/office about three times a week. His drivers then leave around 11 p.m. and make door-to-door deliveries in Westchester, Putnam and Fairfield counties.
Hudson also delivers artisan cheeses, Amish butter, local jams, organic breads, small batch yogurts, hickory smoked bacon, grass-fed beef, free-range chicken, juices, vegetables and more. View Hudson's full list of products on its website .
“Everything that we do is very local,” Rubino said. “And we try and get the freshest products that we can. No added growth hormones. We know the food chain. We know the farmers, we know where the food comes from.”
Especially in warm weather months, Hudson’s drivers easily are identifiable in white shirts, black slacks and a white hat, but Rubino said the uniforms aren't exactly like they used to be.
“I can’t get anybody to wear the bow tie.”
