Yorktown Costco Plan Sparks Passionate Responses

YORKTOWN, N.Y. - A proposed Costco Wholesale Club at 3200 Crompond Road has sparked passionated responses from both supporters and opponents of the project, and the discussion only has intensified following Monday night's public hearing .

In a simple "yes" or "no" poll posted last Tuesday on The Yorktown Daily Voice , 74 percent of our readers voted in favor of the project compared to 26 percent voting it down. More than 200 people voted in the poll.

Here's what some readers are saying about the Costco:

  • Max Leahy : "Costco is the best business that could come to Yorktown! I can't wait for Costco!"
  • Michelle Corsini Glass : "Why would you need a Costco when you have BJ's?"
  • Bill Rubin : "BJ's is opening a new club in Brookfield, CT, a mere 1/4 of a mile down the road from an existing Costco. This shows that not only can BJ's compete against Costco, they're spending millions of dollars to build a store to do so! And what did Costco do? They expanded their store there and put in a gas station to compete! People from Yorktown drive 30+ minutes to get to Costco in Brookfield. There is no Costco to the north of us. You don't think that there is enough untapped demand to support both a Costco and BJ's in town? Not to mention that they are different stores, not identical as people who don't know any better claim."
  • Francis T McVetty : "The parcel is zoned for this use. Lets get going before someone changes their mind... The cost of local government is rising and we need offsets. The home owners can no longer bear the burden alone."
  • Ignatius J. Reilly : "These guys are either getting paid by Costco OR... excited because gas will be 5 cents less a gallon and they don't mind waiting 15 minutes in line to get it. Don't forget the up to 1,000 cars per hour that will be entering and exiting Costco... they're not all coming from the Taconic, and they are going to bottleneck where 202 closes to one lane each way."

The adjourned public hearing continues at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 29 at the Yorktown Planning Board's meeting in the Yorktown Community & Cultural Center, Nutrition Center Room, 1974 Commerce St.
