Anthony Moaf suffered a medical emergency while alone in his cell Wednesday morning, county officials said in a news release.
Paramedics and the jail's medical staff gave emergency help, but Moaf died just before 9 a.m.
He was booked into the jail on Monday, May 16. Moaf was a federal prisoner, and it is unclear what his charges were.
Alexandria police will investigate the death since Moaf was in the custody of the Alexandria County Sheriff's Office.
