Harvest At Hilltop Hanover Farm Draws A Crowd

YORKTOWN HEIGHTS, N.Y. -- Possibly the last day of October in the 65-70 temperature range drew a steady stream of families to Hilltop Hanover Farm of Yorktown Heights on Saturday, Oct. 18.

The Mui family enjoyed its morning at Hilltop Hanover Farm. Pictured are birthday boy Liam (3 on Oct. 18), his parents Michael and Stephanie, and his younger brother Colin. Liam selected his own pumpkin and then painted it.

The afternoon became a little blustery, but the earlier views under sunny skies were perfect for hiking the trails and enjoying the 187- acre property. The children appreciated the face painting, picking their own pumpkin and coloring it, and creating corn husk dolls. The adults enjoyed the farm’s serenity, the farm stand, and farm tours. Also, visitors were able to visit the chickens and the camera shy cows who preferred to lounge and eat in the barn as opposed to taking in the balmy weather earlier in the day. Carol Lake, the farm’s education director, attempted to make the cows more visible but once they started eating the hay the move was virtually impossible.  In addition, farm volunteers were soliciting support for the newly created membership program. The levels of membership range from $50 to $1,000 – with a variety of contribution levels in between. The money raised through this ongoing membership drive will support the expanding educational program, provide food for the chickens and the newly arrived cows (back after a 23 year hiatus), help the farm to continue its support of local food pantries, and allow the farm’s volunteer Board to upgrade the property, and possibly add more animals. A number of benefits, such as farm stand discounts and members only events, are available with membership.  Visit the farm’s website to learn more about the membership program or the array of fall activities available for sign up at Hilltop Hanover Farm www.hilltophanoverfarm.org.
