Throughout the week, Yorktown residents are invited to dine out at several local spots or participate in one of several events including “Paint the Town Purple,” Yorktown Voice and an historic homes tour as part of Relay For Life’s “There’s No Place Like Yorktown” fundraisers. Proceeds from each event will benefit Yorktown’s Relay For Life fundraising ahead of the annual walk on June 14.
One of the highlights of the week’s events includes the Historic House Tour set for Sunday. As a part of the tour, residents will visit six private homes with rich local history. Most of the homes date back to the era of the tenant farmers of Van Cortlandt Manor.
“What a line up for this year,” said Monica Garrigan, senior director for special events for the American Cancer Society. “This committee is amazing and has done a phenomenal job of turning their passion for history into a way to fight cancer. They don't just pick houses. They research and re-create their stories in an effort to connect all of us with the Yorktown of yesteryear.”
On Friday, Yorktown residents will get a local spin on the hit TV show “The Voice.” For “Yorktown Voice,” 12 talented singers will perform and compete with attendees voting for their favorites at the Putnam National Golf Club.
“They are shaking it up this year and having 12 singers audition to be placed on one of three teams. The teams will take time to practice and then the teams will compete against each other and the audience will choose the winning team,” Garrigan said in an email. “It is going to be such a fun night and the list of singers represents the police, school teachers and community organizations.”
Another highlight is sure to be Relay for Life’s “Paint the Town Purple.” Residents are invited to paint homes, schools or businesses as a way to honor local cancer survivors. The line down the center of town will be painted at 9 a.m. Thursday in front of the YCCC Building following a speech from Supervisor Michael Grace.
Relay For Life is also selling giant purple bows for $5 for people to purchase and display on their mailboxes on Friday. Local schools are also set to create “chains of hope” that will be carried around the track at the Relay For Life of Yorktown on June 14.
