Aquarion Offers Tips On Avoiding Frozen Pipes In Bridgeport

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. – With the Fairfield County area deep in the big chill of winter, local utility Aquarion Water Co. is reminding consumers about the dangers of frozen pipes.

Unprotected pipes and water meters can freeze and expand within hours of the onset of frigid weather.

A burst pipe can lead to thousands of dollars in damage for remodeling, mold remediation and emergency substitute housing costs, as well as the loss of beloved items.

“It doesn’t take much. Even a tiny split in a pipe can spew hundreds of gallons of water into your home or business in one day,” said Donna Parlatore, director of utility operations for Aquarion. “We strongly encourage property owners to review and utilize the frozen pipe and meter prevention tips on our website to prevent this from happening to them.”

Aquarion’s website offers both prevention tips and steps to take if a frozen or damaged water pipe occurs.

Examples include:

  • never shutting off a building's heat unless its pipes and toilets are drained,
  • keeping doors to rooms where pipes are open so air can circulate and
  • eliminating cold drafts by sealing cracks and installing storm windows.

It's up to property owners to ensure that pipes don't freeze, especially because Aquarion doesn't repair or thaw pipes.

Parlatore also added the importance of never using a torch or flame to thaw frozen pipes on your own.

“We would recommend contacting a licensed plumber,” she added.

Aquarion has customers in Bridgeport, part of Danbury, Darien, Easton, Fairfield, Greenwich, New Canaan, Norwalk's 1st and 2nd Taxing Districts, Redding, part of Ridgefield, Stamford, Weston, Westport and Wilton.
