GREENBURGH, N.Y. - The Greenburgh Water Department has scheduled its annual maintenance of fire hydrants and will be flushing the system from April 23 through May 10.

Fire hydrants in Greenburgh will be flushed beginning April 23, which could cause water discoloration for residents in the affected areas.

The procedure, which ensures that fire hydrants are working properly and to flush sediment out of the distribution system, will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in different neighborhoods over the 17-day period.

Water systems may experience temporary periods of discolored water and lowered pressure as a result  of the maintenance operation. This discoloration consists primarily of harmless silt and air and does not affect the safety of the water.

Customers should be sure water is clear before washing clothes as staining may occur and should clear the pipes by running cold water faucets for a few minutes after the process is completed. The water is absolutely safe but Greenburgh Water suggests clearing the water before doing laundry and to keep water in the refrigerator for drinking and cooking.

For further information, customers may contact the Greenburgh Water Department at 914-993-1592 or visit the Town website.
