“Paul (Egan, exalted ruler of the Yorktown Elks) was eager to help assist in trying to put a program together for the seniors and was as excited about the opportunity for the Lions and Elks to work together on this project, as was I” said Lions President Ed Lachterman. “When you have two great organizations that do so much good in the community working together, it is a real win/win. It was great to be a part in this celebration of our Country’s Birth and I know the residents had a great time from the thanks and appreciation that they showed us for the performance.”
Egan officiated over the ceremony with the assistance of the Yorktown Lions and folk rock band Sailing Stone. Brianna Chiapparino of Sailing Stone performed "The Star Spangled Banner" and the group performed a few songs after the ceremony.
The Elks' Flag Ceremony started in 1907 and was made a mandatory Flag Day observance at all Elks Lodges in 1911. The ceremony predates the federal observance of Flag Day by 38 years.
Sailing Stone will perform with Jesse Terry at the Yorktown Stage Theater on Aug. 8.
