Elio D'Elia, 73, Stamford Contractor

STAMFORD, Conn. – Elio D'Elia of Stamford died Aug. 25 with his family by his side. He was 73.

D'Elia was born July 31, 1939, in San Mango Sul Calore, Italy, to Giuseppe and Generosa D'Elia. He immigrated to America in 1962 after marrying his wife, Gerarda. He loved spending time with his family, especially his five grandchildren.

He meticulously cared for his bountiful vegetable and flower gardens and enjoyed making homemade tomato sauce and wine every season. His meticulousness carried over into his professional life, D'Elia's family said, as scores of kitchens and bathrooms throughout Fairfield and Westchester counties display his artisanship in working with granite, marble and tile.

He began developing the trade as an 11-year-old bricklayer's apprentice in Italy. D'Elia worked at Frank Mercede and Sons for 28 years before launching his own company, Creative Marble Design, in 1990.

D'Elia is survived by his wife of 50 years, Gerarda Sibilia D'Elia; a daughter, Giovanna D'Elia (Andrew) Fox, of Wilton; a son, Emilio G. D'Elia; a daughter-in-law, Rosemary D'Elia, of Stamford; a sister, Gilda DiNardo, of Stamford; four brothers, Rosario (Angela) D'Elia, of Stamford, Nicola (Adriana) D'Elia, of Stamford, Teodoro D'Elia, of Southbury, Conn., and Antonio (Clemedina) D'Elia, of Italy; and five grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, Raffaele D'Elia.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home in Stamford. A funeral procession will leave the funeral home at 9:40 a.m. Thursday. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church in Stamford. Burial will follow at the family's mausoleum at Queen of Peace Cemetery in Stamford.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Elio D’Elia Memorial Fund, c/o Giovanna Fox, 18 Wilton Hunt Road, Wilton, CT 06897.
