After five weeks of rehearsals, the Yorktown Stage put on its production of the Tony Award-winning musical comedy Saturday, April 13. A sold-out crowd went to see the show over the weekend, and seats are filling up quickly for the group's Friday, Saturday and Sunday performances.

“What’s not to love about it?,” said director August "Augie" Abatecola. “It’s hilarious; you will die from the laughter. It is a really fun and exciting show that everyone will love. It’s been a very long journey, but it was definitely worth it. I’ve always had a soft spot for anything Monty Python so I was very excited to be able to have the opportunity to direct this musical.”

The play centers around King Arthur and his knights, who have been entrusted with a quest to search for the Holy Grail. After Arthur rounds up his knights and gets his “mission” from God, they head out on their whimsical quest to find the Holy Grail. After sword fighting, a wild night in Camelot, an encounter with some strange creatures in a “very expensive forest” and some help from the Lady of the Lake, the gang completes its quest of finding the Holy Grail, while also showing us that each one of us can find our own Holy Grail in life.

But no show would be a success without a great cast and crew, and the "Spamalot" cast is certainly one of the highlights of the show, Abatecola said.

“We have about 15 people playing close to 62 roles,” said Abatecola, who has been directing for about six years. “It can be tough because there is so much to do and so many lines to learn and dance moves as well, but the cast was just fantastic. They were all very excited, very motivated and entertaining. They all stepped in, did their jobs, and it was just a pleasure to work with all of them. It’s been a blast.”

"Spamalot" features a live orchestra and a cast drawn from towns around Westchester and Putnam. Tickets range from $19 to $26. Shows begin at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at the Yorktown Live Musical Theatre, 1974 Commerce St., Yorktown Heights.
