The company will be recruiting singers until Tuesday, June 30.
The Taconic Opera is presenting a double bill: Leoncavallo’s "Pagliacci" and Gilbert & Sullivan’s "Trial by Jury." These short operas were chosen to particularly feature the chorus.
The operas will be performed Oct. 15, 17 and 18 at the Yorktown Stage in Yorktown Heights.
"Pagliacci," a drama, is the classic tale of a love triangle among street circus performers that ends tragically as a result of jealousy. In spite of its sad ending, the street and circus scenes involving the chorus are bright and engaging, the music is beautiful, and it has universal appeal. "Pagliacci" will be performed in Italian with English supertitles for the audience.
"Trial by Jury," a comedy, is the perfect antidote to Pagliacci. This opera is a classic Gilbert & Sullivan tale having a totally unbelievable plot, with characters acting as though everything were perfectly normal. In this story, a man is being brought to trial by his wife for leaving her, and he has to plead his case to a jury that has already been advised by the court clerk that the man is guilty – before the trial even starts.
"Trial by Jury" will be performed in English.
Rehearsals, which began Saturday, take place Wednesdays from 7-8:45 p.m. and Saturdays from 3-4:45 p.m. at the Cortlandt School of Performing Arts, 24 Old Albany Post Road, Croton-on-Hudson.
Experienced choral singers do not require an audition. There are no fees to join the chorus, but members must secure their own music and, if applying early, may be able to participate in special group prices for the scores that are arranged for chorus members.
Requests to participate in the chorus will be considered until June 30. New members may be accepted after June 30 based on their experience and musical abilities.
Singers who have a conflict with the rehearsal schedule may likewise be accepted based on experience and ability. For further information, contact Mary Corda at divamaryc@aol.com or call 914-649-1826.
