Support Connection, established in 1996 as a Yorktown-based nonprofit, founded Support-A-Walk 19 years ago to benefit the group’s cause of offering free, confidential support services to people affected by breast and ovarian cancer. Its yearly walk at Franklin D. Roosevelt State Park in Yorktown Heights sends 89 cents of every dollar donated to such support services.

Sunday’s dreary conditions did not put a damper on the organization's fight against cancer.

“It was an amazing morning. Undeterred by clouds and a drizzle, thousands of supporters came out to honor, remember and support all those affected by breast and ovarian cancer,” Barbara Cervoni, Support Connection director of services and communication, said. “We were thrilled to see that in spite of the weather, all six parking lots at FDR State Park were filled with cars.”

For those who couldn’t attend this year’s walk, there are still plenty of ways to join Support Connection’s cause. Donations to fund its free support services run all year long. To donate online, go here. Donations can also be faxed or mailed to Support Connection, 40 Triangle Center, Suite 100, Yorktown Heights, NY 10598 by using this form.

The Support-A-Walk tradition continued so successfully Sunday that the date for the 20th annual walk has already been set: Sunday, Oct. 5, 2014.

“Support Connection is indescribably grateful and once again awestruck by the love and support shown by all who came to participate: our walkers, teams, sponsors, donors, volunteers, everyone who made this day possible,” Cervoni said. “We especially want to thank and acknowledge those whose lives have been affected by breast and ovarian cancer who shared the day with us. They are the reason Support Connection exists.”
