The aim of the walk is to highlight the needs of those affected by breast and ovarian cancer and to raise money for Support Connection's various services, according to a press release.
Yorktown residents Karen Stachowicz and Susan Hope McCarthy are survivors who reached out to Support Connection for help in their cancer fight.
When diagnosed in 2002, Stachowicz utilized the peer counseling program for help when confronted with tricky decisions, according to a press release. She remains close to her counselor to this day.
“If I have test results I’m worried about, I call her. She centers me,” Stachowicz said in a press release. “She’s always there to hold my hand when I’m afraid. She never minimizes what I’m feeling. She’s also there to revel in every bit of good news, like those good test results that other people really can’t understand.”
McCarthy was diagnosed in 2013, and also has relied on Support Connection's counselors since her diagnosis.
“I called about a month after my diagnosis and asked if I could make an appointment to see someone," she said in a press release. "They told me I could come right then to speak to a counselor. I was amazed how quickly they were able to see me.”
Stachowicz has participated in every Support-A-Walk since 2004, and longtime participant McCarthy formed a team for last year's event, according to a press release.
“The walk is a day to stand tall and let cancer know it is not going to stop us, us being Support Connection! It’s also a day to feel loved by so many people -- whether you know them or not you feel a bond with them.” said McCarthy in a press release.
