YORKTOWN, N.Y. – The annual Support-A-Walk for Breast and Ovarian Cancer will take place Sunday at FDR State Park in Yorktown Heights.

The local residents of Support Connection, established in 1996 as a Yorktown-based nonprofit, founded Support-A-Walk 19 years ago to benefit the group’s cause of offering free, confidential support services to people affected by breast and ovarian cancer.

The fundraiser, which will run rain or shine, allows 89 cents of every dollar donated to go directly to free breast and ovarian support services. In 2012, there were more than 9,000 participants in the event, with registrants from more than 113 different towns or cities and 12 different states, a press release from the organization said.

The walk includes a 3-mile walk, often in honor of loved ones as tribute to those who are affected by breast and ovarian cancer. There is a Survivor’s Welcome Area where volunteers greet and welcome cancer survivors. Along the path, walkers are encouraged and cheered by local bands, cheerleaders and other community groups. Families, friends, co-workers and teams of walkers are invited to walk together. Individuals are also welcome to participate.

Donations are accepted by check, cash and online at the Support Connection website . Messages of support, celebration or commemoration can be displayed on along the Walk path by purchasing Tribute Signs for $50 each.
