The event takes place in the Yorktown High School Auditorium and will begin with a screening of "Genetic Roulette: The Gamble of Our Lives,” an award-winning documentary that explains genetically modified organisms (GMOs).
Immediately following the film, there will be a discussion by a panel of experts including Joan Dye Gussow, professor emeritus, Columbia University, author, food policy expert, environmentalist and gardener; Mimi Edelman of I & ME Farms and former chair, Slow Food Metro North and Geri Brewster, registered dietitian.
For the conclusion of the program, there will be a series of tastings in the high school cafeteria, prepared by area chefs who use food from local farms.
Chefs include Brett Alcaro and Wilson Change of Hilltop Hanover Farms and Cafe of Love; Laura DeMaria of Hemlock Hill Farm; Ghenya Gorbatko of Trailside Cafe; Laurie Gershgorn of Healthy Culinary Creations; Jonathan Pratt of Peter Pratt’s Inn and Eileen Zidi of Cabbage Hill Farms.
“This is a wonderful venue to share the importance of fresh unprocessed food relative to our health, and to sample and learn more about our local resources,” at Laura Tolosi, director of wellness programs for the Yorktown schools.
Gail Chen, vice president of the Yorktown SEPTA, added, “SEPTA is thrilled to partner with the YCSD Wellness Programs to bring awareness to these important issues and at the same time bring the community together."
The screening is appropriate for students in grades 7-12.
