On Sunday, Oct. 12, the Town of Yorktown and Yorktown Chamber of Commerce will be hosting the 6th Annual Yorktown Fall Street Festival and Fair at Commerce Street and Veterans Road. The festival runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and organizers expect between 15,000 and 20,000 people to attend.
Members of the Yorktown Community Dog Park organization are creating a temporary mini-park to showcase dogs as part of a Halloween parade.
"Dog owners who participate in this parade are asked to have their dogs wear costume," Dave Rocco of the Yorktown Community Dog Park organization said.
There will also be demonstrations from obedience schools and animal control officers, as well CPR training on animals.
Rocco is also coordinating a blood drive with the American Red Cross which will include representatives from the New York Be a Match Bone Marrow Program and the New York Organ Donor Network. The drive will take place at the Yorktown Community Cultural Center.
"Only four percent of New York's eligible blood donor program actually donates," Rocco said. "It's embarrassing. There is always a shortage of whole blood and platelet donations. Perhaps this drive can make a difference. These organizations are always in desperate need of help.
According to Rocco, New York ranks 49th out of 51 states plus Washington D.C. in organ donor registration.
"It's alarming," Rocco said. "We're supposed to be The Empire State. We need to bring this out in the forefront. It doesn't take much to get tested for bone marrow."
The event will also feature Patrick Perone, an Elvis impersonator and rising country singer Jessica Lynn as well as vendors and rides. Rocco feels the event is a great way to showcase Yorktown.
"This draws people to the center of the town," Rocco said. "They will get exposed to our businesses and to come back for more. We want to drum up business, create jobs and bring in more tax revenue."
Rocco said he plans to dress his dogs up as a ladybug and a monkey.
"They're not too happy about it, but they are good sports," Rocco said.
