MOUNT KISCO, N.Y. -- Every woman diagnosed with breast cancer has different needs. At Northern Westchester Hospital's upcoming Breast Cancer Symposium, the community will have the chance to go behind the scenes and learn how the hospital's multidisciplinary team of experts, including a genetic counselor, oncology specialists, plastic surgeons and more, develops a plan to meet each patient's unique needs.

Held on Friday, Oct. 27 at Northern Westchester Hospital's Chappaqua Crossing Wallace Auditorium, experts at the annual Breast Cancer Symposium will discuss the evolution of breast reconstruction after cancer and guests will have the chance to witness a simulated breast tumor board – a critical component in the hospital’s multidisciplinary approach to optimize care.

"When we established the Breast Institute 15 years ago, we decided to host a major symposium and invite guest lecturers from across the region to discuss new trends and challenging issues facing the field," said Dr. Michael Rosenberg, associate medical director at Northern Westchester Hospital. An annual event, the daylong symposium is designed as a high level conference for healthcare professionals. This year, the conference will address the field's growing focus on the multidisciplinary approach to cancer care. "What we're doing is examining how we can see the patient as the center of the procedure," said Rosenberg.

In the symposium's first half, keynote surgeons and oncologists will discuss the most recent changes and developments in breast surgery, radiation therapy and a variety of other treatments. "During the second half, which begins at 10:45 a.m., we will open our doors to the community and discuss rehabilitation and reconstruction after breast surgery. We'll end the day with a simulated tumor board, which is an example of how we typically approach each unique case of those diagnosed with breast cancer," he said.

During the simulated tumor board, the community can watch as doctors and staff collaborate to form an analysis and treatment map for a mock patient. The board is designed to provide guests with the chance to see how cancer specialists operate in a non-bedside setting. "We’re demonstrating to the public and to our colleagues why a multidisciplinary approach is so vital to care," said Rosenberg. "People love to watch the thought process, and really experience the human side behind medicine. This is designed to be a window into that."

The goal of the symposium is twofold: to educate and enlighten experienced cancer professionals, as well as offer a tangible takeaway for those seeking to learn more about the medical field. "We wanted to make something that was fascinating and interesting to physicians, nurses and the whole healthcare team, but still resonated with the community," said Rosenberg. "I think this reflects our approach, and gives people a feel of what it’s like to be cared for at Northern Westchester Hospital.”

Northern Westchester Hospital's Breast Cancer Symposium will be held from 10:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 27. Admission is free, but participants are asked to register online.
