Good Food, Craft Beer Keep Family-Run Rt. 6 Tap House/Brewery Thriving

MAHOPAC, N.Y. - Culinary Institute graduate and Chef Dano Maffucci opened his Rt. 6 Tap House five years ago - with the focus on bringing great craft beers and pub food to the Mahopac area.

Maffucci, who owns the restaurant/brewery with his mom, Pat (retired after teaching 30 years at Somers HS) and Dan (retired after 53 years with the Department of the Navy), admitted that some people aren't tuned into the fact that the restaurant also houses a small brewery.

"Some people don't even realize we're also a brewery," Maffucci told Daily Voice during a recent visit. "But we've really ramped up our beers in the last two years. And that invigorates you - it's a whole new thing."

Maffucci taught himself to brew by studying video, researching the internet and getting knowledge anywhere he could.

And he plans on continuing to build the brewery part of his business.

"The restaurant is really called Rt. 6 Tap House, Home of Putnam Brewery," Maffucci said. "Right now we're considered a nano brewery. But within a year we'll be considered a full 40-barrell brew system."

A Mahopac resident for 10 years, Maffucci said he opened the restaurant/brewery when the opportunity was right.

"I was looking for a place to eat and wasn't finding what I wanted," he said. "The timing was right, I was a Chef, so I had a conversation with my family and we found (what was the Old Lantern) and bought it."

From there, Maffucci made it his own.

"We're a brew pub (currently with 35 craft beers on tap), with pub-style food," he said. "We grind our own chopped meat, make our own mozzarella, make our own ice cream. Our seafood all comes from Montauk Seafood at Hunt's Point, we have top quality steaks - all our food is fresh and homemade.

"I take pride in the whole place," Maffucci added. "I totally enjoy what I do for a living. If I didn't do this I don't know what I'd do."

The Rt.6 Tap House, Home to Putnam Brewery, is located at 728 Rt. 6 in Mahopac and can be reached at 845-628-7302.
