"I was diagnosed as a pre-diabetic and realized I had to do something about it," said David, a patient at Northern Westchester Hospital. Pre-diabetes is a condition in which elevated blood sugar levels, raised through lifestyle choices, put patients at an increased risk for developing type 2 diabetes. David realized that to prevent developing the disease, he had to take charge of his health. "I decided that I had to lose weight, exercise and change my diet," he said.

Enlisting the help of the health and nutrition experts at NWH at Chappaqua Crossing, David was able to find both nutrition and exercise guidance under one roof. Working in the physician-guided facility, he partook in a specially designed exercise program aimed at losing weight, building cardiac strength and lowering the common triggers of diabetes.

From cardiovascular and weight training to heart disease prevention and management, David was able to both educate his mind and shape his body. "It was a wonderful experience and as a result, I am no longer pre-diabetic," he said.

David also experienced benefits beyond the improvements to his physical well-being; the camaraderie and friendships formed at Chappaqua Crossing only added to his enjoyable experience. "It's also a good social environment," he said, of the facility. "It's a great place to be, and I've met a lot of new friends."

Since joining the cardiac rehab program at Chappaqua Crossing, David has a new outlook on life. “I thoroughly enjoy [the cardiac rehab] and the quality of my life has improved greatly since I’ve been [in the program],” he said.
