Maria's Serves Up A Big Slice Of Yorktown

YORKTOWN, N.Y. -- For more than 30 years, Yorktown residents have been able to count on one thing: Maria's Pizza will have the biggest slice in town.

The pizza parlor, at 2041 Saw Miller River Road in Yorktown Heights, has been serving up big slices since 1982. Maria's, which has been owned by Vito Picone for the last eight years is also famous for its 3-foot pies.

Picone purchased the pizzeria having been a longtime customer.

"My father always worked in pizzeras his entire life," Vito's son Francesco Picone said. "It was just a matter of time until he made a move such as purchasing one of his own. What better pizzeria than Maria's? The place is literally known worldwide."

"We have the biggest and best slices in all of Yorktown Heights," Sam Sahini, a 20-year employee of Maria's, said proudly. "We offer the best pizza."

The quality of the pizza is why Sahini thinks Maria's has been able to stay in business for long. Sahini said it is almost surreal to be serving customers as children and then seeing them bring back their children years later.

"It makes you realize  how fast time goes and how things change," Sahini said. "We've been serving two to three generations of customers. It makes me feel old, but proud."

Sahini said he is a very simple guy and that his favorite pizza is a simple plain cheese pizza. He said Chicken Francese is his favorite entree and that the most popular order remains pepperoni pizza.

Maria's Pizza is also big about giving back to the Yorktown community.

"We sponsor a lot of teams," Sahini said. "Whatever people in Yorktown need, we are happy to donate. Yorktown is a community that supports local businesses.

Being at the pizzeria for 20 years means that many of Sahini's customers have become like family to him.

"We're always keeping tabs on them," Sahini said. "Our customers mean everything to us."
