NWH's Da Vinci Surgery Offers Unparalleled Kidney Care

MOUNT KISCO, N.Y. -- For those who need surgery to treat dangerous kidney tumors and cancers, receiving life-changing care shouldn't have to mean extended hospital stays followed by weeks of recovery before returning to daily routines. Thanks to the innovative robot-assisted surgeries available at Northern Westchester Hospital, it doesn't have to.

"We use the da Vinci Robotic System to treat kidney tumors and kidney cancers," said Dr. Bromberg, chief of Urology at Northern Westchester Hospital. "We perform many of these surgeries on a regular basis. One of the beauties of robotic surgery is the ability to perform complex surgery for patients through very small incisions in the skin."

Traditional surgeries for kidney problems involve painful procedures and large incisions through the flank, which often result in long recovery times. "With robotic surgery, we're able to do this surgery through very small incisions in the lower abdomen, and patients often leave the hospital after major kidney surgery within one to two days," said Bromberg.

In addition to faster recovery time, the minimally invasive surgery allows affected kidneys to stay inside the body, significantly boosting the rehabilitation process. "We're able to go inside the kidney using robotic surgery and remove a tumor from within the kidney, without having to remove the entire kidney," said Bromberg. Fluorescence imaging gives the surgeon even more precise visibility of the tumor. "As a result, we can preserve as much normal kidney function as possible," he said.

For both patients and surgeons, Northern Westchester Hospital provides a unique, uncompromising experience. "I feel very fortunate to live in the Northern Westchester Hospital catchment area," said Bromberg. "It is a hospital that practices what most other hospitals simply preach."
