Robotic Gynecologic Hysterectomy: An Advanced Minimally Invasive Procedure

MOUNT KISCO, N.Y. -- A hysterectomy may be required to treat gynecologic cancers, such as uterine cancer, endometrial cancer, or early stage ovarian cancer. Also, hysterectomy may be recommended for severe symptoms from benign (non-cancerous) gynecologic conditions, such as uterine fibroids or endometriosis. Advances in surgical techniques and medical technology have changed the way even minimally invasive surgeries are performed. Thanks to the da Vinci robots at Northern Westchester Hospital, women have access to the most advanced minimally invasive hysterectomy procedures.

Historically a hysterectomy has been an extensive procedure that requires weeks of recovery time. When minimally invasive hysterectomy is an option, the most advanced minimally invasive surgery is now performed with the assistance of a robot. Using the da Vinci Surgical System®, the gynecologic surgeon controls highly sophisticated instruments to perform precise surgery through few tiny incisions.

The sophisticated instrumentation and cameras give the surgeon enhanced range of motion, visibility and precision. Because the surgeon can perform the surgery with smaller incisions, the patient can heal more quickly after surgery. For women with cancer, this means they can go on to receive additional treatments sooner, if needed. Patients who have had robot-assisted surgery report experiencing less pain, less blood loss, and lower risk of complications after surgery. There is often a shorter hospital stay, quicker recovery and return to routines.
