To keep that easy, breezy feeling going -- and to get every little bit out of what's left before September begins -- we've rounded up a few staycation ideas.
Get Peachy: Enjoy ripe peaches before apple-season begins. Peach season started Aug.15 at Wilkens Fruit & Fir Farm in Yorktown Heights.
Take a Hike: Westchester is full of wooded trails steeped with varied terrain where you can commune with nature and unplug from the world. Among the possibilities: Ward Pound Ridge Reservation in Pound Ridge, Westmoreland Sanctuary in Mount Kisco, Teatown Lake Reservation in Ossining, Rockefeller State Park Preserve in Pleasantville and Sheldrake Enviornmental Center in Larchmont.
Dine by the Water: Nothing says summer more than dining alfresco (chilled cocktail in hand an extra bonus). Some classic Westchester stunners include Red Hat On The River in Irvington, Forty-North in Hastings, bartaco in Port Chester, Sunset Cove in Tarrytown, and The Pier Restaurant and Tiki Bar in Rye.
Rent a Kayak: Explore the Hudson River via kayak. Hudson River Recreation offers kayak programs in Sleepy Hollow, Croton, and Tarrytown, among other locations. The L.L. Bean site also offers kayaks in New Rochelle and Yonkers. Go here for information. Not up for kayaking but like to row? Boats are available for fishing and rowing at Wampus Pond in Armonk as well as other county parks.
Ride the Dragon: Rye's Playland is a summertime rite of passage. Seek your thrills on the Dragon Coaster, cool off on the Playland Plunge or groove to hip-hop on the Thunderbolt. It’s half-price admission after 5 p.m.; Friday nights feature concerts and fireworks.
Get Away: Be a tourist in your own town (or the next town over) at the Bedford Post Inn in Bedford, the Ritz-Carlton Westchester in White Plains or the new Hyatt Place in Yonkers.
