YORKTOWN HEIGHTS, N.Y. -- Though you may not expect to find fine-dining next door to a gym, stepping into Thyme restaurant is like teleporting to midtown Manhattan.

The restaurant, located in Yorktown Heights, was founded in September 2010. It is a New American steakhouse with a downtown Manhattan feel.

Inside you will find a warm colored interior, featuring low-lit lanterns, comfy leather seats around the bar, and a partially visible kitchen.

The menu changes seasonally, with most ingredients coming fresh each day from Manhattan, according to owner/chef Tom Costello of Yorktown, whose family has been in the restaurant business for more than 100 years.

However, some ingredients such as the ramps and beets come from nearby in the Hudson Valley.

The restaurant's most famous dish is its tuna tartare, which was has unintentionally become a hit. Three awards are displayed on the bar solely surrounding the dish, which is prepared with 11 separate components. But you won't find it on the menu - it's on an ask-only basis.

"We served it as a special once," Costello said, "and now we get people in here all the time asking for it. They'll just sit at the bar and order it with a drink."

Of additional note is the cod, which is served with sugar snap peas, marinated mushrooms and roasted peanut potatoes ($16).

For lighter fare, the thyme salad is a dish that stays on the menu all year-round. Fresh mesclun, apple, cranberries, walnuts and bleu cheese are tossed with balsamic vinaigrette ($9). Add tender grilled chicken ($5), steak ($10), or shrimp ($8) to make it a filling meal.

The restaurant also has a full bar and is debuting a list of autumnal and Halloween-themed cocktails. The True Blood mixes Jose Cuervo, triple sec, lime juice, sour mix and hibiscus syrup ($10). Head in on a Thursday to enjoy half-priced martini day.

The wine list, revamped this month, features 24 wines sold by half pour, full pour and by the glass. Every Wednesday, bottles are half off.

Thyme also brings in live music on Thursdays and occasionally Fridays. They also hold wine-pairing dinners, the next being on Wednesday, Oct. 23 from 7-10 p.m.

Thyme is open from 11:30 a.m - 3 p.m. for lunch, and 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. for dinner from Tuesday through Saturday. Brunch is served Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and dinner is served from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. It's closed on Mondays.

All major credit cards are accepted and parking is located onsite.

Thyme is located at 3605 Crompond Road. For more information, visit their website here .
