Friends' 'Pipe Dream' Turns to Yorktown 'Wishes'

YORKTOWN, NY -- Debbie Zapakin and Lori Weil always had a small seed in the back of their mind that they wanted to open up an accessory and jewelry store.

“We were really finding that we were running to Mt. Kisco, to White Plains and there was nothing here,” Zapakin said. “We had talked about doing something like this for years, so it was a little bit kind of like a pipe dream and then, it was the right time and the space became available and we decided to jump in.”

The duo opened up Wishes, on the corner of Underhill Ave. and Kear St., nearly five years ago. Their original location, which was literally right down the road from where the store now stands, occurred just by happenstance.

“I was filling my car up at the gas station at the station across the street…and I just looked at the old space and I just thought that could be the cutest little store,” Zapakin said. “The spot kind of just presented itself.”

From then on, the two would go through trials and risks of what to keep in the store.

“We wanted to make it unique, so that every time a customer would come in they would find something new. And there’s a lot in here, and we like to keep it fresh and fun and interesting,” Weil said. “We filled it up over the years, and it includes things that we love, things that we personally love, and we do that because our customers will appreciate it.”

For that reason, they try and cater to the customer. On Thursday, the store is offering 15 percent off a total purchase, but they also have their ears open for any suggestions customers want to see incorporated into the store—a benefit of having a small business, Weil said.

“For now, this is the perfect size for us, and we’re not ready to expand,” she said. “Plus, we love this location. We’re right in the middle of town, we’re on the main road, and we’re meeting more people from all over the community each day.”
