On Sunday Evening Green Yorktown sponsored a forum to give all the County (Districts 1 and 4) and Town candidates for office an opportunity to share their environmental positions.I was shocked to see that only one candidate, Terrance Murphy, the Republican candidate for county legislature was not only NOT present, but did NOT have the good manners to decline the invitation or to send in a proxy if he was unavailable. Instead he chose to ignore the opportunity to explain any environmental position he may or may NOT have.We have many issues that impact us in the Lower Hudson Valley, specifically Indian Point, Hilltop Hanover, Open Space, and the potential of upstate development of the Marcellus Shale that can impact our drinking water. I can only assume by both Terrance Murphys absence and his indifference that he does not consider these important issues that are critical to our quality of life.Conversely I was pleased to note that our current county legislator for District 4, Mike Kaplowitz is knowledgeable, articulate, and protective of our environment. He has spearheaded legislation to protect our air quality and preserve open space in our county. He is a supporter of converting Indian Point from Nuclear to other power to make it safer. We only have one environment and we need to protect it. One of the best ways to do so is to make sure that we support candidates who understand this. That is why I am now supporting Mike Kaplowitz. Babette Ballinger
