YORKTOWN, N.Y.-- Maximo Garcia hails from Bronx, N.Y. but that doesn't exlude him from holding mayorship over Yorktown Heights.
Garcia, a social media branding consultant, secured the mayorship of Yorktown Heights while visiting friends in Yorktown this week.
Users of the popular social media platform FourSquare that allows users to "check in" at places, can obtain the status of Mayor if they check in to that one location the most out of the other users.
"It was really easy for me to become the Mayor, I just checked in once when we got to my friends house, and then the next morning," Garcia said. "But other places it's much harder to become the mayor. I live next to Yankee Stadium and people are always battling it out to become the mayor."
Garcia, who said Yorktown was a nice quiet escape from home, often visits Yorktown and made the trip last week for a friend's birthday at a skate park. He said the skate parks, especially where he lives at home, are a place where securing the mayorship is quite a battle.
"It's just like bragging rights, the more you go there, the easier it is to beat other users out to become Mayor," he said.
Besides the bragging rights, however, Garcia, the mayor of 18 places, has received free items and invitations because of his influence on the popular social media platform, and now uses it for work.
"I'm a social media branding strategist, so I'm always on Twitter or FourSquare, and now I've found ways for my clients to use it for branding and things like that," he said. "It just makes the world so much smaller."
