Shrub Oak Church Celebrates Golden Jubilee Kickoff Mass

SHRUB OAK, N.Y. – St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church celebrated the kickoff of the Golden Jubilee of the parish Sunday with an 11 a.m. Mass led by Bishop Dennis Sullivan, vicar general of the Archdiocese of New York.

Several parishioners on hand who have been part of Seton Church since it was dedicated on June 22, 1963, at the old St. George's Church on Route 6 in Mohegan Lake were recognized. Monsignor Robert McCabe, who served as a priest at Seton 50 years ago under Monsignor Arthur Nugent, delivered the homily and recalled the early days of the parish.

The Shrub Oak parish, which Nugent adoringly called "the greatest parish in the world," was named after St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, who is credited with creating the Catholic school system in America and was the first native-born American to become a saint, in 1975. She was beatified, the first step toward sainthood, in 1963.

Seton Parish has several events planned throughout the year to mark its 50th anniversary.
