YORKTOWN HEIGHTS, N.Y. – William Shirin of Yorktown Heights died on April 21. He was 79.
He was born June 29, 1932 in Dobbs Ferry, to William and Helen Stachurska Shirin. Raised in Yorktown, Shirin graduated from Yorktown Heights Central School in 1950. He met Mae Knickerbocker when they both worked at Reader's Digest in Chappaqua and they married on Sept. 26, 1959.
After retiring from a 26-year career at Chase Manhattan Bank, Shirin was employed up until his death at Mt. Kisco Medical Group. Among his lifelong interests were stamp-collecting, cars and animal welfare causes. In recent years he became an avid New York Rangers fan. He was also a member of the NRA and the Heritage Foundation.
Shirin is survived by three daughters, Lisa Shirin, of Yorktown Heights, Gail Curran, of Hopewell Junction and Linda (Bill) Forte, of Rome, N.Y.; a sister, Olga (Michael) Kupson; two grandchildren, a brother-in law and two sisters-in law. He was predeceased by his wife of 46 years, Mae, in 2005, and his sister, Stephanie Sarles.
The family will receive friends from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Thursday at E.O. Curry Funeral Home in Peekskill, where a celebration of his life will be offered at 11:30 a.m. Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery in Cortlandt Manor.
