YORKTOWN, N,Y. - Laura Anderson of Girl Scouts Heart of the Hudson Troop 2860 was recognized at Yorktown Town Hall last week for earning the organization's highest honor - the Gold Award.
The award is earned after the completion of a “journey,” which is typically a community service project. For her project, Anderson raised nearly $2,000 to purchase supplies to build a wrought iron fence at Rosary Hill Home for terminally ill cancer patients.
"Many of the patients find great joy in caring for the vegetable plants in a small garden on the Rosary Hill property," Anderson said. "The existing fence was falling down and was very dangerous, so I picked out a wrought iron fence and arbor gate to beautify the space and make it safe for the residents."
Anderson, along with her parents, brother, and friends, spent a few days installing the fence and cementing it into the ground.
"It turned out beautiful," she said. "I called my project 'A Rustic Garden at Rosary Hill.'"
Anderson is currently a freshman at the University of Notre Dame. She is majoring in biological sciences/pre-med. Her troop leaders are Christine Kretz and Federica DeAcutis.
