YORKTOWN HEIGHTS, N.Y. – There are now two locations in Yorktown where you can donate items to help local residents who have fallen on financial distress.
Yorktown Love in Action, a non-profit organization that helps families overcome severe financial obstacles, recently opened up a second “Hidden Treasures & Donation Center” on 3144 East Main Street in Mohegan Lake.
The organization’s first donation center at 3565 Crompond Road in Cortlandt Manor opened a year and a half ago.
Thus far, Yorktown Love in Action has helped 15 families and is currently sending money to four families. With the help of monthly business sponsors and profits from its donation centers, the vision of helping people get back on their feet is in full swing.
“Families have to meet certain requirements,” Donna Simone, founder of Yorktown Love in Action, said. “Usually it’s a case where something drastic has happened to a family and where, even with their own income and efforts, their financial burden is simply insurmountable.”
Simone said the donation centers accept clothing, coats, footwear, handbags, belts, hats, linens, towels, blankets, bedding, draperies, stuffed animals, furniture, appliances, electronics, household items, jewelry, knick knacks, sports equipment and automobiles.
They do not accept books, VHS tapes, toys, or tube televisions.
Throughout the month of November the organization’s “Hearts of Hope” fundraiser can be found throughout Yorktown. White paper hearts of $1 and pink paper hearts of $5 will help purchases specific needs of those in need.
The following Hearts of Hope sponsors will have the hearts available for purchase: Little Sorrento, Piazza Roma, Mohegan IHOP, Mohegan Applebee’s, Yorktown Friendly’s, Yorktown Insurance, Frankie & Augie’Z, Anthony’s Pizza & Pasta, Michael Robert Salon & Energy Center.
Simone said every contribution counts.
“Seeing the impact of the families we help is an amazing thing,” she said. “These are awesome people. The tears they she breaks my heart. I wish we could do even more, but know one day we will. One day we’ll pay off someone’s entire mortgage.”
