YORKTOWN, N.Y. - Donna Simone-Sofo could barely slow down long enough to explain her latest undertaking to benefit Yorktown in between all of her volunteering efforts.
Her newest project is to open a store in Yorktown called a 1,2,3 store where everything is priced from one to three dollars.
I have one up in Middletown now, and I started it there because the rent is cheaper, she said. But what I really want to do is open one up in the Yorktown/Peekskill area.
Simone-Sofo explained the idea for the store is part of her organization Yorktown Love in Action , and would act as a slightly used thrift store to help those who are less fortunate.
What I need is for the community to come to our store and drop their clothes off to us so that they know its going to go right back into their very own neighborhood right here in Yorktown, she said.
The money would be used to pay the rent for the store itselfand would be priced in that range to keep the project going, but in times of need the items would be free.
I have people come in who are going off to a job interview and they really need something, Im not going to charge them. This is to help them, charging people isnt the point of the project, she said.
Sofo said she was also hoping to get donations from local businesses in the area in $10 installments to help pay the rent.
The whole idea is to help people, but to keep it local and to keep it in the community, Sofo said. This is still Yorktown Love in Action. Its taking a bit of a different turnbut I like it. This is going to make a great impact on our community.
