Yorktown Mall Creates Scholarship Opportunities

YORKTOWN, N.Y.– To aid students in their quest for higher education, the Jefferson Valley Mall is offering a scholarship to students in the surrounding area.

The scholarship, as part of the Simon Youth Foundation, is being offered to one student in every community home to a Simon property, including Yorktown's own mall.

“Our mission is to ignite hope for a brighter future in students, and our foundation is proud to partner with Jefferson Valley Mall to award scholarships that will remove some of the financial obstacles that would otherwise prevent a student from achieving the dream of a college education,” J. Michael Durnil,  president and chief executive officer  of SYF said in the scholarship announcement.

Students can pick up a copy of the application at the Simon Guest Services Center at the mall, or online here . The application period ends on Thursday, March 1. Any student who plans to graduate in 2012 and lives within 50 miles of a Simon property is eligible. The scholarship is for up to $1,400 to a student who has plans to enroll in an accredited college, university, vocational or technical school.

In 2011, the recipient of the scholarship from the Jefferson Valley Mall was Justin Reed.

This is the twelfth year the scholarship has been offered through the Simon Youth Foundation, a national nonprofit that provides educational opportunities for at-risk high school students. In addition to the scholarship, 10 regional awards called “Award of Excellence” will be given to top candidates, and New York is one of those eligible regions. For this award, students have the opportunity to win a $2,500 scholarship renewable for up to three years.

In 2011, the Simon Youth Scholarships program awarded $1.15 million to 260 students nationwide. Recipients of the scholarship will be selected by Scholarship Management Services, a third-party administrator, based on criteria including financial need, academic performance, leadership skills and participation in school and community activities. Those students who are the first in their family to pursue a post secondary education will also be given close consideration.

The completed application, along with official school transcripts and parents’ most recently filed tax form, must be sent to Scholarship Management Services by March 1.
