BEDFORD, N.Y.--She may not have been the first to cross the finish line in this weekend's 5k Run for the Hills race in Bedford Hills, but Danielle Wegielski of Carmel may have been the biggest winner after her boyfriend, Yorktown Police Officer Robert Pavletich, met her at the finish line to ask for her hand in marriage.
A stunned Wegielski said yes.
The course for the Bedford Hills Neighborhood Association’s third annual Run for the Hills road race Saturday morning was a series of steep hills, from the Depot Plaza start to the finish line on Babbitt Road.
Association President Janet Jacobsen said organizers had been given the heads-up before the race about the planned marriage proposal and said they had carefully tracked Wegielski from the race's halfway mark to the finish line to help orchestrate the whole thing.
“I had no idea,” Wegielski said, smiling broadly after she accepted the proposal and displayed her ring to the crowd of runners.
The newly-engaged couple has not yet set a date for their nuptials.
