This letter to the editor was written in its entirety by Yorktown resident, James Kutter.
To the editor:
This year we have a somewhat unusual Republican primary for the Supervisors race, as well as the attempt for a write in battle on the Conservative and Independent lines for the same position.
Obviously, the Town Supervisor is a full time position and then some. It is also one that can present a very steep learning curve to someone who has not followed local issues for years. The residents of Yorktown deserve the full attention of their top elected official, the person responsible for the day to day operations of the Town.I understand that many years ago, when Mr. Grace was Town Attorney, he split his time between the (full time) Town position and his private law practice. I cant comment on whether or not such an arrangement was acceptable back then, but it certainly isnt now and certainly not for this position. And what about conflicts of interest? Even if Mr. Grace were to take a leave of absence from his law firm while in office, if he remains a partner, how can voters be sure that his firm isnt benefitting unfairly from his government position? He needs to state his intentions publicly. Voters should have his assurance that he would give this important position his undivided attention. If he wont provide that assurance, that should tell us how important he really thinks the job is, and what kind of attention he thinks the job requires.
That might also explain why he cant seem to get his facts straight about so many of the critical issues facing our town officials.Sincerely,
