Yorktown Resident Makes Volunteering a Way of Life

YORKTOWN, N.Y.-- Volunteering has always been a part of Donna Simone-Sofo’s life, and now she’s turning being a volunteer into action, rather just a way to describe her.

“I’ve always had my hands in volunteering. Anybody you talk to that knows my name knows ‘Volunteering: that’s what Donna does’,” Simone-Sofo said. “I’ve just always worked as a volunteer, whether its with the Mohegan Volunteer Ambulance Corp, or the American Heart Association, or the American Health Association…I’ve just always done it, it’s always been a part of me.”

Simone-Sofo also volunteers by herself, whether it’s part of an organization or not. But because she started seeing and helping so many needy people, she decided to form Yorktown Love in Action, as a way to get people to come together to volunteer and help her make a greater impact.

“I have always taken children in basically off the streets and I’ve always had kids living with me, and it’s just always been in my heart to help people,” she said. “This just kind of formed because I was just helping so many people and I didn’t have the money to do it all myself. It kind of just happened where other people agreed with me to do something about it.

At the moment, she’s currently helping four different families in a variety of ways. Some live with her, she helps to pay the bills for others, helps some others with groceries, and some with clothes and friendship. She said she’s received overwhelming support from people in the community and even where she works as a dance instructor.

“I can go into the studio at any point and say I need help with this, or I need clothes for this child, and people are just so willing to help out in any way that they can, it’s been great,” she said.

Despite the help she’s received, and the efforts of Yorktown Love in Action, Sofo said hands on help, or monetary donations are what the group needs most.

“People are so willing to give donations, or to get rid of their junk which I am so grateful for, but I need hands on volunteers to help us do the projects we want to do,” she said. “Our mission is to do whatever we can to help people, and that means helping with bills or moving lawns or doing construction, whatever we can do for those who need it.”

Yorktown Love in Action held a car wash for fundraising at the Yorktown Vineyard Community Church this Saturday, and will host a tag sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. next Saturday at the same location; they are not affiliated with the church.
