YORKTOWN, N.Y. - A day-long schedule of activities is planned in Yorktown Saturday to celebrate "I Love My Parks Day."
"If you can make one, great. If you can more than one, even better," said Jane Daniels, coordinator of the town's program.
A map and program book will be available all day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at FDR State Park, parking lot No. 1, where a spring cleaning project will also take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
At 9:30 a.m., a two-and-a-half hour guided hike to Giant Boulder in Granite Knolls will be held on the Yorktown Trailway, with a 10 a.m. stop at the dedication of the bridge over the Taconic at Woodlands Legacy Fields.
At 10 a.m., several other activities will kick off. There's a guided two-hour mountain bike ride on the trailway and participants are asked to register at the event's website. There will also be a two-hour guided hike with a history of the Mohegan Granite Quarries at Sylvan Glen Nature Preserve. The same tour will be repeated at 1 p.m.
In addition, a fishing derby is slated at Sparkle Lake for a $5 fee and there is a drop-in event at Turkey Mountain Nature Preserve.
At 11:30 a.m., a hands-on event to learn about geocaching will be held at FDR State Park, parking lot No. 3. At 12:30 p.m., there will be a Wet and Wild Nature Hike at Hunter Brook Preserve.
At 1 p.m., a guided two-hour hike with a history of Hilltop Hanover Farm and Environmental Center will begin and at 2 p.m. a family-friendly guided hike will take place at Kitchawan Park Preserve.
All events are rain or shine.
