Yorktown Veteran Honored for Service to Community

YORKTOWN, N.Y.—Yorktown resident and veteran John McQuillan was recognized by the town Tuesday night for his service both to his country and to his community.

State Sen. Greg Ball accepted American Legion Post #1009 nomination of McQuillan to the Hudson Valley Veteran’s Hall of Fame, and the town board thanked him for his service as well.

“We stand as a great community, even during tough times, on their shoulders and their commitment and their sacrifice, and they represent the greatest [people] that America has ever had,” Ball said. “You’ve not only served your country but you’ve come back to serve it again and again and again, whether it be a pancake breakfast, an event at the VFW or any event in this town, because these are the faces that I continue to see again and again continue to make this community strong.”

McQuillan will be inducted at a ceremony held by State Sen. Greg Ball on Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. at the Putnam County Emergency Services Building in Carmel.

McQuillan was selected for nomination for the hall of fame for his military service in the U.S. Air Force, his fifty years as a mentor, and as a leader for Boy Scouts and his 26 years of work in the American Legion Post #1009. Each year on Memorial Day McQuillan goes with boy scouts and cub scouts to the different cemeteries in town to read a history about each soldier who’s grave now rests in Yorktown and to place a flag in front of their grave. Because of this, McQuillan has identified and recorded over 480 veteran’s graves in Yorktown.

McQuillan thanked those who nominated him for the honor, and all of his fellow veterans in the American Legion.

“I joined for the camaraderie, for the community service,” McQuillan said. “It’s nice to be recognized especially here with my fellow legionnaires.”
