YORKTOWN, N.Y.-- Erin Brophy has relatives who live in Greene County, and has been told first-hand of the damage Hurricane Irene caused, so she is doing her best to help out.
Greene County is located in the Catskills , in an area absolutely decimated by the recent hurricane. Brophy said those who lost power and those who still have their power are equally desperate for the donations as the storm took everything they had.
At Fabric Mart located at 2019 Commerce St., where Brophy works, good samaritans can drop off donations to delivered to the needy in Greene County. Brophy said the families need anything and everything including toiletries, shoes, pet items, food, clothing and baby items.
They lost everything, so anything we can give to them to help is great, Brophy said. She said so far people have been extremely generous with the donations, and she is hopeful more people will drop things off.
Everything they had was pretty much wiped out by the storm, so they are in need of almost everything, said Linda Speidell, the owner of Fabric Mart. And the sooner the better. As soon as a pile is put together, it will go up.
Speidell explained there really was no cut-off date for donations to stopas they will keep sending things to those in need for as long as they need it, and as long as donations keep coming.
