Veterans are entitled to a “burial flag,” issued by the Veterans Administration and generally procured for the family by the funeral home. The intent of the program is to use the flagpole in the Veterans Memorial Park to fly each burial flag received. There will be a glass enclosed case attached to the flagpole bearing a certificate identifying the name of the deceased Veteran, his /her branch of service as well as the years of service.
There will also be a brief inscription asking passersby to stop and remember the sacrifices made by this honored veteran. The flags will be flown for a minimum of 2 weeks during the period of April through November. This time period may be extended, weather permitting.
The duration of each flag flown will also be determined by the number of flags received. When the flag comes down at the discretion of the family, the flag will either be returned to the family or friend on an “as is” basis (e.g. weathered) or entered into the American Legion Flag Retirement Ceremony which is held each June. The families and friends of the deceased veteran may participate in the retirement program. Families and friends of the deceased will be notified when the flag is to be flown.
