Ball is chairman of the Senate Veterans, Homeland Security and Military Affairs Committee. The New York State Senate Veterans' Hall of Fame was created to honor and recognize outstanding veterans from the Empire State who have distinguished themselves both in military and civilian life, according to a press release.

Nelson is chairman and chief executive officer of Eleven Bravo Enterprises, a consulting firm he founded in 2013. He previously served as the chief executive officer of HBO. Nelson has received numerous awards and recognition for his work on behalf of veterans, including the Veterans Advantage TOPVET Award and the Vietnam Veterans of America’s Excellence In The Arts Award, as well as their highest award, the Commendation Medal for Exemplary Service to Veterans and the Community, according to the release.

“I am extremely proud to have had the opportunity to honor Bill Nelson at this year’s Veterans’ Hall of Fame. He has demonstrated an immense dedication to serving his country, and his patriotism should not go unrecognized,” said Ball. “Recently, Mr. Nelson has joined our efforts and has been a driving force behind the 6 percent service-connected disabled veteran state set-aside that was just signed by Governor Cuomo.”

Nelson is a Vietnam combat veteran, having served with the U.S. Army’s 2/502nd “Strike Force” Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division.

“It is extremely humbling for me to be chosen by Senator Greg Ball to join the NYS Senate's Veterans Hall of Fame and stand alongside my very distinguished and dedicated fellow veterans also named to the Hall of Fame. We all share a deep commitment to bring honor, respect and support to those who went into harm’s way, especially our post-9/11 veterans, to preserve America's freedom and now need assistance,” said Nelson. “We are motivated to do so not for recognition, but because it is simply the right thing to do. This is a great privilege for me and I thank Senator Ball and his fellow senators for recognizing the veterans of this great State.”

Nelson's military awards and decorations include the Combat Infantryman Badge, Bronze Star, Air Medal, Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 4 Bronze Service Stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Valorous Unit Award with oak leaf cluster, Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm Unit Award and the Vietnam Civil Actions Honor Medal Unit Award, according to the release.
