John Kocinsky, 53, of Carmel, is charged with misdemeanor criminal possession of a controlled substance in connection with an alleged Tuesday incident on the Taconic State Parkway, police said.

Kocinsky was also cited for unlawful possession of marijuana, and charged with multiple traffic infractions, according to police.

About 8:25 p.m., a Yorktown police officer says he saw Kocinsky erratically driving a pickup truck near the Route 6 parkway exit.

Authorities stopped Kocinsky, and say they soon discovered he was in possession of alprazolam – the primary ingredient in the prescription sedative Xanax – and marijuana.

Alprazolam, when used properly, can reduce the symptoms associated with anxiety and panic disorders, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine. However, Xanax can be habit forming and is a controlled substance because of its potential for abuse.

Kocinsky eventually was released without bail and is scheduled for a July 16 Yorktown Justice Court appearance, court records show.
