Community Day Tops Yorktown News This Week

YORKTOWN HEIGHTS, N.Y. - Here are a few of the top stories from this week around Yorktown:

  • The Alliance for Safe Kids hosted the 24th annual Yorktown Community Day event featuring the Taste of Yorktown last Saturday at Jack DeVito Veterans Memorial Field. Jewel of Himalaya won the Best Yorktown Signature Dish, Nuttin' To It won the People's Choice award, Big Al's BBQ took the award for Best BBQ and Oreo Dream Team won the first-ever Best Cupcake award.
  • A Somers gas station attendant won $1 million after playing the New York State Powerball. Darwin Morales matched the first five numbers from the May 4 Powerball drawing and won $1 million, according to a press release from The New York Lottery. Morales received an oversized check Tuesday in Fishkill from New York Lottery's Yolanda Vega.
  • The National Weather Service issued a Flash Flood Watch Thursday afternoon for Westchester County. Flash flooding occurred throughout the county as widespread heavy rainfall fell ahead of Tropical Storm Andrea. The flash flood watch went into effect just after 2 p.m. Thursday.
