YORKTOWN, N.Y.Guiding Eyes for the Blind received a donation of $15,000 from OP4G , a member-based online research community, which will be used for the Guiding Eyes Sights on College program.
Our Sights on College program is intended to encourage and inspire young blind people to pursue higher education," said Lisa Deutsch, Guiding Eyes' Vice President of Marketing and Development. When blind students successfully learn to work with their Guiding Eyes dogs and master specialized computer technology, the playing field is leveled between them and their sighted peers. We are extremely thankful to OP4G for sharing our commitment to helping blind youth live productive and independent lives."
The program combines dog training, adaptive technology instruction and campus training for college-bound blind and visually impaired students. Using local college campuses, the students learn how to navigate a college campus with a guide dog. Then, when the student arrives at their college, an instructor travels to that campus to assist them in acclimating to their new surroundings. The student and the Guiding Eyes dog learn the routes for their daily schedule and the donation will allow Guiding Eyes to expand its training onto local Westchester campuses.
